Paragon Software Systems is sponsoring a new charity in Dorking that supports young carers aged between eight and 12 years old.

Run by the United Reformed Church in the town, My Time for Young Carers gives children the opportunity to enjoy activities in a relaxing environment with other children of their own age away from their stressful duties at home. Kirsty Heard, Paragon’s Office Administrator, co-runs arts and crafts sessions for the charity.

“The children love their arts and crafts sessions and I am often oversubscribed. Many have established friendships through the activities and they look forward to seeing each other. They take great pride in their handiwork and are constantly making things for their parents and siblings. It is great to see them interact and relax with others who understand what they have to do at home in a welcoming, stress-free environment. I’m pleased to use my free time in this way and it’s gratifying that Paragon supports the work of the charity,” says Kirsty Heard.

My Time offers respite activities for children and young people in Surrey and the surrounding areas whose lives are adversely affected by the disability or ill health of other family members. The Dorking branch was opened in February this year with the Ewell branch established in early 2012. By attending the sessions, the young carers have the freedom to get on with playing with their peers and join in creative activities if they wish.

Charles Nockold, Marketing & Business Development Director, Paragon Software Systems says: “My Time provides an essential service for these young children who have to cope with the additional pressures of looking after parents or siblings. It is surprising that there are so many young carers in the locality and My Time gives them the opportunity to have some freedom to do what other children do. We are pleased to be able to support Kirsty and the My Time team in their extremely worthwhile efforts.”
